Dear Colleagues,
Toffler argues that we live in “the roaring current of change, a current so powerful today that it overturns institutions, shifts our values and shrivels our roots. Change is the process by which the future invades our lives, and it is important to look at it, not merely from the grand perspectives of history, but also from the vantage point of the living, breathing individuals who experience it.” The future Toffler talks about is now. Our ability and willingness to change have always been a prerequisite for taking part in the Nursing Dream. The most critical problem leaders have is that they often don’t understand the powerful impact of change on people because they are caught up in the “roaring current.” Nurses who are responsible for leading or managing a professional practice are asking themselves how they can create a climate where nurses can grow and flourish, where patients and families receive the highest quality care, where technology takes its place in patient care and where professionals work collaboratively to ensure quality patient outcomes. In these turbulent times, the ability to change frequently and rapidly is a requirement for leadership. Change management must rank as one of the key leadership skills that that will be needed in the years ahead. To succeed in the new world we have first to learn ways to ask ourselves some new questions. Do we know what our strengths are? Are we confident in putting forth our strengths? What obstacles are giving us the results we don’t want? In what ways will we assure that the patients entrusted to our care will have only the highest quality care? It is with these challenges in mind that we have chosen the themes for our 2nd International Nursing Management Conference. It is our hope that nursing colleagues from around the world will join together to explore our future. Our goal for the conference is to have the collective wisdom of nursing leaders explore the implications of change on professional practice in the following areas: • Tackling Accreditation Quality indicators
